Eight veterans who are residents of Canton Regency Senior Living did a whirlwind trip to Washington, D.C., in September as part of the Honor Flight Network, a national nonprofit that funds trips to the nation’s capital to commemorate their service. The veterans headed out from the Cleveland airport at 3 a.m. on Saturday and returned later that night.
The Honor Flight Network coordinates more than 100 chapters throughout the country for a powerful, mission – honoring the nation’s veterans by bringing them to Washington, D.C. at no cost to visit the memorials built to commemorate their service and sacrifice. While initially focused only on America’s World War II veterans, Honor Flight Network now also includes those who served in the military during the Korean and Vietnam War eras, along with veterans of any service era who are critically ill. Honor Flight Network has flown more than 300,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. since its inception.
As they traveled through the Cleveland the Baltimore airports, the Canton Regency veterans said they were cheered by fellow air travelers. It was a long and emotional day for the veterans who made the trip. Don Foit, a former Air Force sergeant who served as a radar technician in Mississippi, Michigan and northern Canada, said the trip was a “long day.” But, he said, everything about it was memorable, from people he met to moments spent at memorials.
